Aristotle, the great philosopher, once wrote "The whole is something beside the parts." (Aristotle 980a Metaphysics,Translated by W. D. Ross). In the realm of construction, there is a wide range of trades, companies, tools, materials, etc. that on their own, service specific demands, and when combined, work together to complete projects of a greater caliber with greater involvement. But there is something even more to be gained when knowledge and experience across multiple skill sets consolidate as one. This is what the Dimon Carpenter has to offer, and what sets him apart from others. The way in which these skills are utilized define him and make him memorable.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a carpenter is "a worker who builds or repairs wooden structures or their structural parts." (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/carpenter) Our men are carpenters; they are capable of building or repairing wood structures and structural parts. But just as Fayetteville is to the Town of Manlius, a carpenter is not all they are -- carpentry is just one of the many areas of expertise they cover. At one time or another, they have been framers, roofers, window/ siding/ insulation/ HVAC/ &flooring installers, plumbers, electricians, tilers, trim carpenters, cabinetry makers, painters... you name it! There is not one aspect of residential building they have not been exposed to, involved in, or completed from start to finish. Years of broad experience have opened their eyes to the importance of seeing the big picture, the house as a whole, and not just their impact on the part they have been tasked with for the day. A house is a system, and they understand how that system works, and what role each part plays. Not only do they know how things are built, but why. They can spot trouble areas, identify the source of a problem, and create long term solutions that others may be unaware of, overlook, or omit to mention. They have been in countless homes, and over the years have not only gained knowledge in construction but have also developed a knack for suggesting design ideas to match the architectural style of a home. They have respect for the trade, and work to create in a way that seems as if had always been there.
So, in my search to find the proper term for our men, one to do their work justice, I came across the idea of a "craftsman".
"A carpenter builds things. A craftsman creates a work of art. While most people approach their work with the mindset that they just want to get it done, craftsmen are more concerned with who they are becoming and what they are creating rather than how fast they finish it." (http://sourcesofinsight.com/be-a-craftsman/)
Although carpenter is the first term that comes to mind when addressing a skilled workman in the home (and that's okay), just know that a Dimon Carpenter will go above and beyond because he is a true craftsman. He will be reliable and timely, a friend and an educator. You can trust that no corners will be cut, and won't have to worry about the things you don't see. His character, honesty, and work ethic are the driving forces behind every educated decision he makes in carrying a project through to completion. He may not be the fastest, nor the cheapest but the benefits you gain by having him on your job will be clear.
"The world is filled with those who get things done the fastest and the cheapest, but it needs more artists, craftsmen, and craftswomen. When you become a craftsman in a world of carpenters, you will stand out and people will clamor to work with you.”
We pride the Dimon Carpenter, and the greater meaning behind his name!
